Favre Era Begins in New York — in Green of a Different Shade

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Brett Favre took the practice field in Jets green Sunday, three weeks after the trade that ended his 16-year marriage with Green Bay and set up one of the strangest sights of the NFL season: No. 4 in New York.

The Jets open Sept. 7 at Miami, where Favre will face the team that passed on trading for him. His new jersey set a single-day sales record for the league's online shop when it went on sale this month.

The divorce from Green Bay was one of the summer's longest-running sports stories: an unretirement, a standoff with the Packers' front office, a commissioner's intervention and finally the trade, completed in the small hours of an August morning.

Aaron Rodgers, Favre's understudy for three seasons, makes his first start for the Packers on Monday night against Minnesota — with Favre's shadow looming over the huddle.

"I had 16 great years there," Favre said. "This isn't about proving anybody wrong. It's about playing football."

Las Vegas oddsmakers moved the Jets from also-rans to playoff contenders within hours of the trade.
