Buzz up!MILWAUKEE - CC Sabathia came within one debatable scoring decision of a no-hitter Sunday, overwhelming Pittsburgh 7-0 and deepening the sense that Milwaukee's midseason gamble might carry the Brewers to their first postseason since 1982.
The lone hit was a slow roller in the fifth inning that Sabathia barehanded and bobbled; the official scorer ruled it a hit rather than an error. The Brewers said they would appeal to Major League Baseball for a review — a ruling that would retroactively award the no-hitter.
"I think it was an error. He thinks it was an error. Everybody in the ballpark thinks it was an error," said manager Ned Yost. "But we won the game, and that's what matters."
Since arriving from Cleveland in a July trade, Sabathia is 9-0 with a 1.59 ERA, single-handedly transforming the Brewers' rotation.
Milwaukee holds the National League wild-card lead entering September, three games ahead of St. Louis.
