NEW YORK - Fresh from winning a record eight gold medals in Beijing, swimmer Michael Phelps will test his comic timing as host of the "Saturday Night Live" season premiere on Sept. 13.
The booking caps a whirlwind fortnight for the 23-year-old from Baltimore, whose Beijing performance made him the most decorated Olympian in history with 14 career gold medals.
Since the Games ended Aug. 24, Phelps has been on a victory lap: the talk-show circuit, a guest spot at the MTV Video Music Awards, and endorsement talks that agents say could make him the highest-earning Olympian ever.
Lil Wayne is set to be the musical guest for the premiere. The new season arrives amid intense interest in the show's election-year political sketches.
Athletes hosting "SNL" have a checkered history — for every Peyton Manning triumph there is a wooden jock best forgotten. Phelps told reporters his goal is modest: "Just don't embarrass my mom."
