SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Inc. on Tuesday invited reporters to a Sept. 9 event in San Francisco headlined "Let's Rock," setting off the annual guessing game over new iPods — and the customary frenzy over what Steve Jobs might have up his black sleeve.
The invitation, featuring a silhouetted figure with an iPod against a bright background, follows Apple's tradition of music-themed September announcements. Analysts expect thinner iPod Nanos and a new iPod Touch with the App Store built in.
The event comes as digital music enters a new phase: iTunes, now the largest music retailer in the United States, surpassing Wal-Mart, faces growing pressure from subscription services and from Amazon.com's DRM-free download store.
Jobs' health remains the perpetual undercurrent. The Apple chief, a pancreatic cancer survivor, appeared gaunt at June's developer conference, prompting the company to reaffirm that he is healthy and has no plans to leave.
Investors will also watch for any hint of new Mac laptops, which are overdue for a redesign, or a cheaper iPhone.
